The very first statement in that opinion piece by a nuclear advocate is incorrect, so I stopped reading at that point.
Reducing emissions doesn't require expensive energy. It requires moving AWAY from expensive energy.
Renewables + storage is already cheaper than coal. That's why in free markets, from North America to Europe, to Australia to Taiwan to India, coal is in decline, and renewables are increasing.
In command economies, like China, North Korea, Vietnam, Venezuela, Iran etc, fossil fuels are retaining their market share for the moment.
