Naturally, discussion of a WES takeover of Griffin Coal immediately raises 'monopoly' questions. On other hand, the state-owned Verve Energy is the 'monopsonist' buyer, and WES' Premier Coal would soon be Verve's exclusive coal supplier in any case.
WES could turn out to be the only bidder (as happened with the Coles 'auction'). Certainly, no other bidder could enjoy the large synergy value that would accrue to WES.
