"The development of Western Australia's biggest greenfields gold discovery in a decade is tipped to open up a new mining province in the far eastern Goldfields.
The Gruyere deposit, discovered by Gold Road Resources, lies within the Yamarna belt close to the Northern Territory border, on the outskirts of the region's traditional gold country.
It is considered to be the fifth belt of gold resources in the Goldfields but remains largely unexplored, with companies mainly exploiting the traditional belts closer to Kalgoorlie.
The deposit, which is twice as big as the Sydney Harbour Bridge in size, is larger than Tropicana — which was WA's last major discovery, made 10 years ago.
Gold Road Resources executive chairman Ian Murray said the company has proven sceptics wrong by showing the belt does hold vast, untapped resources."
