the biggest challenge IMO, as with most mine sites, is going to be environmental approvals/requirements. the biggest wild card in my mind (and it's not that big) is the Sulphur produced by the retort. Sulphur from retorts in Gladstone were a problem - but mainly because of their proximity to residential areas. alpha doesn't really have that residential proximity problem. but also furthermore, I've heard that bitumen actually is considered to be of better quality when it includes a percentage of Sulphur so I believe the plan is to include the Sulphur into the bitumen mix, rather than shoot it up into the sky.
I believe the developmental retort prototype (by SRK consulting) is being tested as we speak/type. and so all the emission/efficiency figures should be be compiled soon. and that variable should be laid to rest shortly.
there'll be limited and no need for tailings storage (and should be taken care of with a tailings tank even if it is required). so that shouldn't be a problem.
the only other environmental issue is water - I believe some retorts require the torbanite/cannel coal to be washed. but that will be understood soon too.
but look this is just getting into the nitty gritty. when you have to start looking at these sorts of specifics to identify the level of success of a venture, I think we're onto a pretty good thing.
