Tye Burt, CEO of Kinross Gold, who, inter alia, commented that the acquisition of Red Back Mining - and in particular of its Tasiast gold mine in Mauritania - has been a "transformational" deal for Kinross reckoning that this project's huge potential, alongside the company's other projects, gives Kinross the best growth profile among the senior gold producers - although some of the others out there might argue the point!

Kinross fielded much criticism from elements of the financial sector over the price it paid for Red Back, but Burt feels that the growth potential at Tasiast in particular will more than allay the criticism. He commented at the RBCCM event that current drilling is effectively expanding the Tasiast resource by half a million ounces a month - and with the ongoing drill programme it is about the fastest growing deposit in the world.
