I know I'm a day (well 2.5 hours) earlier than promised but I couldn't stop laughing.

The Augusta drinking water source that PMF refers to doesn't actually draw the water directly from the Savannah River near the Savannah Water reclamation plant but from a tributary some 8 miles (12km) further up the river. It is the Abercorn creek.

This is an example of PMF uses a correct fact (that the City of Augusta draws significant water supply from the plant on the Savannah River) to then imply that "it is not exposed to salt", it - being the Port of Savannah, is credible.

The truth is that salination intrusion of the Savannah River has been increasing inland for quite some time perhaps as a result of the dredging to improve the economic viability of the Port.
The state of the salination is depicted here in a map produced by the United States Geographic Survey. This is indicating that salinity has reached well beyond River Mile 20 at the point where the channel depth was increased to 42 feet.


1987 The Georgia Conservancy also expressed concern especially about the method used to determine the potential invasion of saltwater.

The deepening impacts the estuary’s environment by increasing salinity intrusions, depleting dissolved oxygen and affecting suitable habitat areas.

These are discussion points which I am sure others can go into greater details, about PMF I don't expect you to take my word for it.
