Shares in Barra Resources have soared after the explorer said it had made a massive gold discovery at the Burbanks underground mine near Coolgardie in Western Australia.
But mining experts said while the find was the largest they had ever heard of, further drilling was needed to ensure the result was not a one-off.
Barra hit a gold intersection yielding a very high 10,300 grams of gold per tonne - or over 10 kilograms per tonne.
The company believes it is one of the most spectacular gold discoveries in Australian resources history.
"I have been drilling for two decades in and around the Kambalda-Kalgoorlie gold province and cannot recall any intersection of this magnitude," managing director Dean Goodwin said.
