Not sure either, not a behavioural scientist, but some liken it to the Stockholm Syndrome. Can recall the similar reaction to the holders of those Bond stocks and similar for that period. Some images stay with you, one where all those long-suffering holders were cheering and clapping some UK immigrant, formerly a signwriter, at an investor meeting, at a time when their investments were being incinerated.
