i agree with oliveoyl But I think that left may be used for someone who does not wear a uniform or carries a batton or a sharp red pencil and is more likly to be soft and forgiving instead of the right wing man or women who always like to wear some uniform, including priests clothes and yells instead of talks and insists on the hard black letter of the law or rule or holy religius books. The real left also caled socialist puts human life and ethics and morals before rules. When a person insists on rules especially on those which sutis them, they are right wing. Sometimes even the military can be left wing but thats very unsual. the priests in the poor countries who dont shout the bible at you all the time but help you, like in south america, they can be caracterized as left wing too but the pope is defiinitely right wing -too hard for the little person. Thats my opinion any way but like oliveoil said they have now lost their clear meaning. hope this helps.
