I'm not sure if that is quite right, at least not in Qld and NSW.

One of the morning papers reported that these two states do not have "the truth as the basic be all, end all defence.

Apparently there is the issue of the public's right to know, and if it's not deemed to be in that category, it becomes irrelevant even if what was said or printed, was true.

At least that's the way I understood the commentator.
