Here is a New York Times article about Guyana and the discovery by Exxon of huge oil reserves off the Guyanan coast. Discovered only three years ago it will go into production by 2020. No direct mention of the gold mining sector - other than a mention of rampant smuggling - or Troy but it raises the concern that Guyana may experience the dutch disease where easy windfall profits causes hyperinflation and a collapse of the domestic economy.
Anyway some might find it an interesting background read. My own impression is that Guyana is not as dire as the NYT journo has painted it (for one, it still uses the British legal and administration models).
