@SmugLex
I agree with you as an investor, one must have gut feeling to decisively made an decision on the next step to move in investment. The following is cut and pasted article posted in MW. Even the great investor WB can miss the correct bottom,
in 2008, he made the moves to reinvest, only to see about 20% more to the bottom in 2009, but at the end he is the winner. Today at 4:00pm US eastern time, yahoo finance will be live stream his company presentation, anyone have the access please share the info. Note that WB ‘s Berkshire Hathaway has $128B cash waiting for the next move.
From Beat the Market The Easy Way by Sy Harding 2007Warren Buffett, Market Timer ExtraordinaireThe Buffett Partnership was launched in 1956. It was a limited partnership similar to a hedge fund. Turned $10,000 investment into $300,000 by 1969. Annual compound growth rate 29.9% compared to a market averages 12.5% over the same period. It would require leverage and considerable in and out trading, taking profits on winners when they became overbought, and moving on to stocks that had not yet made significant gains.When Buffett closed his partnership in 1969, it was one of the most dramatic market timing moves of all time. He cashed out entirely in early 1969 and told his investors they would be better off in government bonds. After the serious bear of 1973-74 (Dow lost 45%), Buffet believed the market had reached a long term low and said so in Forbes and started buying, another dramatic market timing move.{My note: WB also made a similar buying call in Oct 2008 with a NYT op-ed "Buy American, I am" but the market bottomed about 20% lower in March 2009 before it recovered.}Berkshire Hathaway has more than 40 wholly owned subsidiaries. They were acquired to become wholly owned operating subsidiaries. This gave rise to the Buffet buy and hold investments forever (myth). Very few BH investments have been long term investments.
