H1N1 vaccine trials pushed back MEG ALEXANDER REPORTING August 26, 2009
OKLAHOMA CITY -- We've heard that there will be significantly less of the H1N1 flu vaccine available in the early months of fall. We now know clinical trials of the vaccine are behind as well. IPS Research in Oklahoma City is one of the national testing sites for young children and older adults. They have had to push back the start date on the trials twice because the test vaccine isn't available yet.
Dr. Louise Thurman from IPS says it stems from the government being too optimistic and some scientific variables,
"There's been a delay getting the virus from which the vaccine is manufactured to the pharmaceutical companies to actually get the vaccine started. From what I understand, this strain of virus is a little more slow growing than what they anticipated."
Thurman believes this delay could push the vaccine's availability to as late as November.
