Mr Haggarty met Merrill Lynch this week, after meeting with UBS last week.

He is highly confident that Mr Tinkler can get the nearly $900m equity. He and others in the market have played down the notion of Japanese backers- the thought is that it is more likely Noble will kick in equity.

It is possible that Tinkler has a mezzanine option up his sleeve, which will help if some of the Gang of 48.3% that gave provisional support for unlisted scrip, such as AMCI, First Reserve and JCP, decide they'd prefer the cash.
