WHEN you are an alcoholic or drug addict, good news doesn't come around very often.
But a fortunate group of 60 such patients in the Russian city of St Petersburg have achieved great results with a drug marketed by a Melbourne biotechnology company.
In results released to the ASX today, Solagran's drug Ropren was found to greatly assist in the treatment and detoxification of chronic alcoholics.
The tests at the Skvortsova-Stepanova Psychiatric Hospital showed alcoholics given the treatment recovered much more quickly than a control group.
They showed better and faster improvements in neurological status, blood chemistry, cognitive function and EEG tests.
Side effects such as alcohol abstinence syndrome and depression were also greatly improved.
Ropren, which contains a compound called bioeffective R derived from pine needles, has been registered as a pharmaceutical in Russia for the treatment of a range of liver disorders.
However, Solagran in January won patents that expand the possible uses of the compound to the treatment of alcohol and drug addiction and for the treatment of memory decline and forms of dementia including Alzheimer's disease.
If Ropren is found to assist in treating these problems, it would greatly increase the potential market for the drug around the world.
Directors Vagif Soultanov and Denis Kilroy bought $145,032 of Solagran shares in January.
Solagran shares closed up 0.5 at 90 yesterday.(January 08)
