Lordo, Been away from HC since my last post so missed your question. Gunnindi is pretty much on the money - frost, cold and mycosphaerella tolerance mean much of Tasmania suited to nitens versus globulus. Globulus generally fails above 300m and gets hammered by fungus below except in low rainfall areas where growth rates then become water limited and are poor, as in a significant part of WA's MIS plantings.
Average pulp yield of nitens is also less, but huge potential for breeding to lift that. Current pulp yield of 15 yr old Tasmanian nitens was running at around 53.5%. Ten year old globulus in SW WA wouldn't be much better (but would much better if grown to 15 years as well - a flaw of the TIM and GSP MIS projects!).
Nitens also has lower basic density than globulus as explained by Gunnindi.
