Position trading is great IMO as you can have a life without being trapped in front of a screen for the first few hours of every week day.
Also the statistical concept of reversion to the mean and usually an overshoot, can be used as a tool when the index has moved to the edge of a Bollinger Band. Doesn't work every time but around 75% of the time, which provides a strong edge.
The factors that you have mentioned plus the seasonality weakness could see further drops towards 5800 within a month.
