Hi Radio. NO they were not mining the " Escarpment ". Look back at the photos. The road up the valley was cut thru a coal seam around 5m thick. They sold this surplus coal mixed with that from the Cascade mine into the domestic thermal market so as not to hinder construction. There is currently a stockpile there around 20m high and 50m across all from site works.

In the Bluff face on the Whareatea road, which goes south up the valley, immediately adjacent to the holding pond is where all this coal came from.
