The real value still exists in these stocks - doesn't matter if it's NGE, or BHP.
Think about the economics of the situation here.
You get a couple of fools out there dumping stock to the bid and the market crumbles as a result - see what happened to MAK yesterday (a stop on the stock sold it to $0.20 thanks to a margin call). Just depends on how many orders are in market. When the bid's dry up it's easy for stocks to be sold down 20-30% - the nature of the beast is unfortunately.
Look for the value people, but remember, do your own homework - do NOT ever take someone elses advice unless you've done the numbers yourself.
I don't think Rudd & Swan really thought about the consequences of their actions - then again, sociopath's don't tend to, do they?
