Digging up a mountain of clay seems a lot less environmentally friendly to me since it requires ruining whatever's on the surface, even if you put it back after. See Ioneer's current problems with a rare wildflower on top of it's resource. And given the concentration of lithium in the clay I assume they'd need to dig a lot of it, unless I've misunderstood. Surprised this is what they're going for.
