zinc is also a useful supplement if taken when first symptoms of a cold appear - it has been clinically shown to help reduce the severity and duration of colds.
on a serious note re mens health etc. jhamann is right about the benefits of zinc supplements however it is potentially injurious in high doses. i don't know what constitutes a high dose - i guess normal supplements are within guidelines.
