One closer to home for me is the Lakes Development Scheme at Castlereagh, just outside Penrith, NSW (google Penrith Lakes). Like Toodyay, it's about an an hours driver from the State capital. The area was a metal quarry for forty or so years. When quarrying ceased it was proposed for a series of lakes on the site. Then when preparations were planned for the Sydney Olympics, the establishment of the rowing course and also the building of a canoe & kayaking facility on a whitewater slalom course came into being.

Just recently there is now a proposal under consideration to create a $150 million film precinct on an adjoining site. (google 278 Castlereagh Road, Penrith, filming location).

Agreed, things can happen to disbanded mining and quarry sites.
