This is not tax advice. I haven't spoken to an accountant because I too do my own tax. Australia has an income tax treaty with Canada so that we pay tax on any capital gain within our own tax system the same way we would on domestic shares. The tax treaty prevents us from being hit twice with income tax, but I still suggest you get advice and don't take my word for it.
