From what I have read, a universal power take off system suitable for all types of wave energy devices is what the industry is seeking.
As I understand it, wind energy generators mostly operate with a common power take off unit across the industry.
At the moment, there are a variety of companies trying to design a power take off unit that will do the same for the wave industry. Scotland is providing financial support to see this happens.

In the meantime, CWE will have to use whatever power take off system is best suited to their needs now. No doubt the system will be superseded in time.
For now they need to maintain their position as a world leader in wave technology. They have the platform, the licences, the research collaboration agreements, the world wide network and the experience that other wave energy farms are yet to achieve.
Should the holy grail of power take off systems be discovered, we want CWE to be the one they go to first.
