That's formaldehyde..... .... which is normally used to preserve bodies or body parts of humans or animals for years on end. It has a very distinct smell, always present at mortuaries or or morgues.
It is also a base for plastics manufacture, when combined with phenol it is one of the components of Formica and other decorative panels.
Also known as Bakelite in another form.
