dunnycan, whether Bernanke and the other masters of the economic universe can keep this show on the rails is the great question of the age. I wish I knew the answer. I suspect things will get worse before they get better.

But, one thing you can say about Bernanke is that he has made a detailed study of the great depression of the 1930s.

Anybody who believes that balanced budgets and the gold standard will get us out of this mess should also study the 1930s and ask themselves if they really want to revisit the era of tent cities and soup kitchens.

Hoover had the gold standard and a balanced budgets policy and they led to the worst global economic disaster ever. It also facilitated the rise of Hitler in Germany and another world war.
