The problem for Rio is that unless they act very quickly, they will be outbid by the big car companies on current and imminent Li producing mines. I personally don't think they have any time to wait, imho. The most influential car companies (i.e. Ford, Merc, Tesla) have all attended the recent BMO Global Metals and Mining conference and have had "room-to-room" meetings with many of the Li, Ni (and other) miners. Rio are apparently on the hunt for Li mines but are likely to be outbid by the big car companies; that's according to a very recent Bloomberg report.
A longer term option for Rio is to have another crack at the Jadar Li project in Serbia, which I think they are likely to do, but they need something in the short term, and it may well be PLS with a very long life asset, positive cashflow, and with other ASX-listed Li projects still being explored nearby PLS.
