Investing in banks in Australia lately has been largely due to their attractive dividends rather than their growth potential, especially in recent times with depressingly low interest rates which have rendered cash-based investments almost completely noncompetitive. But, as share-price growth has taken a downturn, so have their dividends. They now need to put a larger piece of bait on the hook to get investors to bite, and from what I can see on this thread (and those of other banks), a great deal of traders are being suckered in for the bull run - "I don't want to miss out on the run back to thirty bucks ($90 for CBA)."
But, not so fast. Those highs were in the pre-pandemic economy when airlines had almost a bum on every seat, the property market was entering Valhalla, and money was being splashed around like booze at a buck's night.
Banks are now having to forego their mortgage payments for six months (longer if this drags on), not because they really care for Brad and Linda in East Hills, but because they need to save themselves from the disaster of that one domino falling which will crash so many millions of other dominoes - a major mortgage debt crisis which could end Australia's residential property dream. With low interest rates, and loss of that mortgage income, banks are having to now look to the corporate sector for any sunlight they can get. And there is the next potential domino. With many employees working from home, corporations will need to also reduce costs and so downsize their office space which will put further downward pressure on the commercial property market. Don't believe me? - it happened in 1992 during the "recession we had to have." The only true saving grace now is the government coming to the rescue with its "Avengers" stimulus / welfare packages, which by the way brothers and sisters, ain't free money. You and your children, and their children's children will pay it off.

Reckon this is the bottom? You ain't seen nothin' yet.
