But nor do I rail against the vile acts of one side and defend the other side. Let alone defend a regime like Putin's ex-KGB mob simply because they happen to be opposed to what I hate at a particular moment.

What we have here is a 'situation' - an understanding between right wing authorities and right wing terrorist groups. The terrorists aim to commit symbolic acts of violence in the hope that the other side will finally relent and let them achieve their political aims. The authorities feed on the acts of violence to achieve their political aims and (having a huge resource advantage) stimulate the terrorists by provocation.

It's a ghastly game and the unfortunate people who are killed or maimed in terrorist acts and wars of revenge are merely dispensable.

If you can't see that, you're not alone. But it's true.
