FRBs reduce the intensity of fires that is a fact and even though on extreme fires can burn through FRBs that are few years old on the cooler days they can stop fires and allow crews to round up the main edge of the fires,trying get FRB done is a real pain and often decided in the capital cities not in the regions,politics interferes with forest policy and a handful of inner city seats set the direction,FRBs also give animals a safe refuge and I have seen this on many fires that I have attended having shared a safe sheltered area with numerous animals. Parks and many of their staff have long had an ideological dislike of FRBs and you only need to look around some of the Parks offices in the country to work this out,talking to a few parks staff in East Gippsland over the last few days there is an admission from some that they may have got FRB and back burning wrong.
