It does work but I find it won't if you are too fast.
Sometimes the machine is not yet at that point where you just insert one letter and then it feeds the rest and password in.
If it goes wrong, then I type in my user name, then move down and click where the password is supposed to be. Most of the time it then inserts the password.
You could also try clicking on your name (after you inserted it).
