The World Health Organisation’s early failure to declare COVID-19 an international emergency has the hallmarks of an old scandal in West Africa which led to 11,300 people dying from Ebola. First contact with the deadly infectious disease was made in December 2013, in the small African nation Guinea which shares borders with the Atlantic Ocean, Liberia and Sierra Leone. It took five months from that moment for the WHO to declare the outbreak an international emergency. By that time it had jumped into neighbouring countries and killed an extraordinary number of people. Harvard medical experts, 20 experts from their respective fields, have since released a detailed report on the WHO’s failures which make for a sobering read in the face of the new global threat, coronavirus. Professor Ashish Jha of the Harvard Global Health Institute wrote “The most egregious failure was by WHO in the delay in sounding the alarm”.
