I think we have to change our mindset the next stanza is about the preservation of capital, if you get a return on that then you are doing well. So bonds like Australian treasuries, if interest rates fall the treasury bond usually rises in value, for instance, there are some near some Australian around the 2027-9 maturity that pay 4.25-4.75% bonds and their value has gone up 5-6% since I bought them under a year ago. Similar with US treasuries, the AUD is likely to fall so having USD treasuries lets you hedge the AUD risk. I have about 5% of my portfolio in shorts, 90% in bonds (there are heaps of corporate bonds that are worthwhile, then another 5% long on certain equities that I think will prosper. I just feel sorry for anyone that has a lot of their life savings tied up in this market> I am not condescending just concerned for folk that cant afford to lose anything.
