My comments:
Why "serious pain?" All the nations that are in debt can use printed money to pay off their debts.
The "too big to fail" financial institutions can be "loaned" printed money to pay off their debts by the Fed etc... and these loans written off.
Gold can be made a Tier One asset and revalued to something like US$10,000 an ounce.
No "serious pain" is needed.
