"Cardiovascular implants such as stents, occluders, vessel filters and artificial heart valves are implanted under x-ray. Follow-up examinations are also done under x-ray. A single procedure results in a radiation dose equivalent to 250-3000 chest rays, raising the patient's lifetime chances of developing cancer. Procedures also require contrast agents which can result in serious complications for the ~30% of cardiovascular patients with coincidental kidney disease. VueKlar is developing implants that overcome well-known obstacles to imaging under MRI, and which do not require contrast agents. The result: no radiation or contrast exposure for patients (or clinicians), superior imaging options, and lower treatment costs for hospitals."
