That is very true. I'm thinking of all the airlines that have failed over the years, apart from Ansett, all failures had no big backers. Virgin has survived on the back of Branson, Tiger because of Singapore Airlines and Jetstar because of Qantas.
I can think of a few off the top of my head that failed.
Compass, Impulse(bought out by Qantas), Ozjet. I am sure there are others.
