@poyndexter - I could live with the first one - but have come to a decision - thanks all.
Will get my bricky to replace plaster board wall with fire brick - and keep NOBO - maybe install a marble 'board' above it to make it all look like an established fire place.
I'll also use the air-conditioning unit, which is also in the main living room a bit more - always think it's expensive to run, but need to test that - it didn't cost much this summer, when it was on a fair bit, as we had so much heat, but I rarely use it in winter.
and
keep the roller shutters down, curtains drawn in rooms I don't use much
and
install more curtains - already have material. - one for entry door, which is really drafty.
I live in an old house - and it's made of hard bricks, which seem to have a granite pebble core cold brrrrr - with large windows, but roller-shutters, will keep them shut - although I hate the darkness.
