Almost everything we do is selfish. So the advice from various sources is that you whittle that right back to the bare minimum. I guess that means job, shelter, food only. Or if you live in a country where they allow people to become professional seekers, do that. Get up at 4am, eat a bowl of gruel and meditate/pray all day. If you're after the big prize (enlightenment or "heaven") it's pretty much a requirement regardless of the style of religion you're into. How many make it? No idea. One could reasonably assume the number is small - "many are called", etc.
I meditate most days. Helps with trading, but that's the extent of it. I find the comparitive religion stuff interesting though.
