Reported "Daily Gross shorting" for friday was significantly lower at 2526726 shares or 13.10 of turnover, yet achieved the largest decline.

I **think** gross shorts are the number of shorts taken out on the day, but NOT those that are covered, hence I don't believe it to be the NET shorts on the day. Am I correct with that interpretation?

For the week, the reports show "daily gross shorting" as:

Shares, % of turnover and % decline

    Mon: 2,202,334 22.77% -5.35%
    Tue: 2,689,836 18.76% -.94%
    Wed: 9,203,309 36.94% -4.76%
    Thu: 4,347,969 23.96% -4.00%
    Fri: 2,526,726 13.10% -6.25%

Now the pigeons are deliberately kept in the dark as to what the total short position is on any stock, while the longs are fastidiously documented.

Not knowing how many of the shorts were covered on that day or any other, does anyone care to hazard a guess as to what the current total number of short sold shares in the ASX's black hole of shorting are?
