FORTESCUE Metals Group continues to pummel the naysayers by awarding the locomotive contract as well as the contract for the shop detailing of steel for the ore-processing centre, which will be located at the Cloud Break iron ore minesite in Western Australia's Pilbara region.
The locomotive contract was awarded to ASX-listed United Group in conjunction with US powerhouse General Electric, which is to deliver 15 Dash 9 "CW44" locomotives for commissioning in November 2007.
No specific commercial details were released, with Fortescue saying the contract value was under the budgeted amount.
Perth Drafting was awarded the contract for the shop detailing of steel.
The locomotive choice will hopefully reassure BHP Billiton, which was concerned that potentially inferior equipment used by third parties might be detrimental to its rail line – should any such party one day get access.
Fortescue is building its own 255km of track from the Cloud Break-Christmas Creek deposits in the Chichester Range to Port Headland, with access to BHPB's line being sought for the Mindy Mindy deposit held jointly by Fortescue and Consolidated Minerals.
Meantime, BHPB has awarded rolling stock contracts covering 480 iron ore wagons to the United Group, which said the equipment would feature the latest in heavy haul bogie technology from Standard Car Truck.
United said the FMG and BHPB contracts were together worth more than $127 million.
