If it was NZ you'd be calling 'em "sweetheart." Try tossing a thin net (or two) over and around the tree letting it (the net) fall as low to the ground as you can. Prune the tree to make it lower (human hight). Fruit trees should only be three-four metres high anyway and with as sparse a folliage as possible.
