Spray the tree and around the tree with a product called Scat (spelling may vary). Undetectable to the human nose it has a perfume that repels (revolts) possums and the like. Available from your nursary and probably harware stores.
I suspect you may need to re apply after rain which may be a problem in Melbourn. :))))
