i use the real estate analogy.
if you are selling a house and you have a genuine bidder then you invent the mythical other bidder or make the buyer aware that there is a potential buyer.
when that other buyer walks you have to tell the genuine bidder a good story re why they walked.
imagine this....they can have the house at that price...its too expensive....i dont think the agent will use that line.
Better to suggest that the timeline was not right for them or perhaps that they couldnt get finance.

There is only one company here that is in trouble with truth in takeovers and that is AGM. They invent a bidder for fridays announcement and by tuesday they have declared they are not interested due to a timeline imposed by AGM themselves.
