AV programs are there to catch viruses, not to stop hackers. Modern PC's should not not slow down too much with a decent AV program and even if there is a slight slow down it's probably worth. I too only rarely have a positive AV hit but I have plenty of clients that get hit with all kinds of things. And spam is not a virus either, it's spam and can be dealt with through your email program.
