If you click on the Apple icon , upper left, then System Preferences, then Displays ( in Hardware), you come to Resolution, which has two options, (1) Best for built in display, which mine is set to, and (2) scaled, which gives quite a few options of size and resolution.
You might find what you want there.
As I said mine is on the first option and everything is great for resolution, size, and readability.
