WITH coal seam gas now a looming export product for Australia, we are also exporting the expertise.

Locally listed player Eden Energy is spreading its wings to Britain, which it sees as having enormous promise for coal seam gas.

Together with Welsh partners, Eden won 17 exploration licences and is hoping to tap into high British gas prices.

Executive chair Gregory Solomon said Britain was becoming increasingly dependent on foreign supplies as its offshore gas fields dwindled.

By 2020, an estimated 80 per cent of Britain's gas supplies will be imported.

In line with this supply shortage, gas prices have doubled in the past year to new seasonal records.

Into this environment, Gregory said Eden's 50 per cent share of 1800 square kilometres of exploration for coal seam gas could become very valuable.

He said Welsh coal was acknowledged to be "the gassiest in Europe", so Eden was confident of the potential for significant finds of coal seam gas.

A British Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology report found that a combination of coal seam gas, LNG imports and gas imports through pipelines would become more important sources of supply.

It also found that only around half of Britain's gas supplies had so far been tapped, leaving coal seam gas as an important contributor in tapping into remaining supplies.

Shares in Eden Energy, which has announced a placement at 32, fell 0.5 or 11.6 per cent to 38.
