March 1 (Bloomberg) -- Macarthur Coal Ltd., which supplies
a fifth of the world export demand for pulverized coal, said it
has looked at potential projects in Mongolia and Mozambique to
boost resources.
Increased scarcity of resources globally meant mining
companies seeking growth would have to consider newer mining
territories, Nicole Hollows, chief executive officer of the
Brisbane, Australia-based company said today at a briefing.
BHP Billiton Ltd., Itochu Corp. and Cia. Vale do Rio Doce
are among companies looking to tap Mongolia to meet surging
demand from China, the biggest consumer of coal. The nation's
deposits of coal, copper and other minerals may yield more than
$1 billion a year, according to consultant Mine-Info Inc.
``Mozambique and Mongolia have got really large resources,
that is somewhere you could go,'' Hollows said at a media
briefing in Melbourne. ``We have had a look over the fence.''
Macarthur is targeting annual exports of 9 million tons of
coal by 2011 as it expands mines in Australia to take advantage
of a planned increase in port capacity at Dalrymple Bay.
Shares of Macarthur fell 5 Australian cents, or 1 percent
to $4.82 at the 4:10 p.m. close in Sydney. Macarthur yesterday
reported a 48 percent drop in net profit for the first-half to
A$42.4 million.
Mozambique's deputy mines minister last month said Rio de
Janeiro-based Vale will build a terminal at the port of Beira to
export coal from its planned Moatize mine. Moatize may produce
up to 26 million metric tons of coal a year and is expected to
be the largest coal mine in the southern hemisphere.
Macarthur said it wasn't looking for coal in Indonesia, the
largest exporter of coal used by power stations, because concern
over the lack infrastructure made potential investments
unattractive.
A move into iron ore production, a strategy under previous
management, has also been ruled out, she said.
``We made a decision at the end of last year that our focus
is on coal,'' Hollows said.
