For those not on Twitter - from the CEO
What a day! Our clearance to fly over Brisbane and Ipswich first thing this morning disappeared (I wont bore you with the details) and we then spent a couple of hours begging, pleading,haranguing and generally not giving up until one call led to another and eventually someone said YES. 15 minutes later our aircraft were in the air and collecting what is going to be both heartbreaking andjaw droppingimagery for the historical record. We gotspecialclearance to fly at 2500ftand spent the entire daysurveyingthe devastation at 2cm resolution. To put that in perspective our competitor who no doubt you all use capture their imagery at 10cm. Put that in further perspective it means you can see a walnut on the ground..not sure why we use a walnut as an example but I am confident it will also work for other types of nuts!
We collected a huge amount of data today. We start processing it tomorrow and the most high resolution images of Brisbane in the world will be on nearmap.com on Sunday with the rest of the surveys uploaded throughout next week. We experienced lots of activity on twitter and Facebook and updated all our followers throughout the day as to the flight status. I will be in Brisbane next Tuesday for meetings so will be able to experience first hand the devastation and clean up efforts - everyone at nearmap.com hopes what we did today proves helpful and valuable to the community. We have decided to offer a time based licence to all Government Departments andEmergencyServices so they can make full use of our PhotoMaps.
Finally the media has picked up on what we are doing and we have received plenty of requests for imagery which we will have tomorrow and hopefully it will appear in Newspapers and online shortly. I have an interview with a journalist at 6am so time to call it a day...I have posted a picture our Pilot took whilst flying over Brisbane earlier today."
