Here's a theory on how the calcrete layer's actual surface can show elevated gold residue from deeply covered basement containing gold. The gold is drawn up by the roots of the plants from deep down. When the plant material at the surface breaks down it is leached back down to the calcrete layer and is concentrated mainly on the surface of that layer.
