Tuckey urges greater say for wheat growers
    Monday, 19 December 2005. 10:06 (AEDT)

The federal Member for O'Connor, Wilson Tuckey, has weighed into the debate about the system for exporting Australian wheat.

Mr Tuckey, who represents most wheat growers in Western Australia, says export agency AWB Limited is taking advantage of its monopoly position to charge exorbitant prices for its services.

Mr Tuckey says three positions on the board of the Wheat Export Authority should be set aside for representatives of export wheat growers.

He says those representatives could then could appoint another company to market Australian wheat if they were not happy with AWB's performance.

"That retains the single-desk concept but gives wheat exporters the right - through a vote for those three members - to decide how it will be conducted in the future," Mr Tuckey said.

"Above all, [wheat growers will] be able to say to AWB Limited, 'unless you get your prices down, unless you stop screwing us then we're going to go to tender and see who else can do it cheaper for export wheat growers'."
